Technological Pedagogy

Fall 2020

This has been a busy semester.  With everyone teaching from home, we have been working to provide even more resources.  These resources have included DesignPLUS and Cranium Cafe.

Some resources that were provided in prior semesters but are still very important include:

Up and Running in Canvas, a series of videos specifically designed to get you running in Canvas very quickly.  Many new training videos are also available here.

Training Videos, videos on many topics specifically designed for training faculty on how to use different parts of Canvas, Zoom, and many other tools.

Student Videos, videos specifically designed for students that you can embed in Canvas.

Training Webinars, long videos on many topics, specifically recorded as training webinars.

Spring 2020

Welcome.  This spring has brought a lot of changes at IVC and in Canvas.  The first friday of every month has a presentation scheduled.  See the Workshops Calendar above for specific information.

There is also a video series, Up and Running in Canvas, specifically designed to get you running in Canvas very quickly.

We have also setup trainings for Spring Break and the week after.  Please see the workshops on the right and visit the Workshops Calendar above for times and locations.

For help with Canvas, please contact Tim Van Norman at the link on the right or use this link for the Canvas Helpdesk.  You will be asked to login using your @ivc.edu email address.  If you have Canvas, you can simply login through Canvas.  Otherwise, you will login as a guest. Once logged in, use that email address and your Cranium Cafe password to return.

Fall 2019

Many new resources have been implemented over the summer and this semester.

Training Videos

There are several videos covering many aspects of Canvas that are designed to help teachers use different parts of Canvas.  They can be found at Training Videos.

Webinars

The Webinars that were started in the Spring semester have continued and additional trainings have been recorded.  All of these trainings and Webinars can be found at: Training Webinars.

Student Videos

There is also a series of videos prepared for you to use in your classroom that can be found at: Student Videos.

MySite Progress Report

MySite's Progress Report is now available in Canvas.

Progress Report allows you to send individual messages to each student regarding their progress through your course. These messages also are recorded for Counseling. When the student sees a Counselor, the Counselor can pull up the messages and see if you have suggested the student see a Counselor and why.

The Progress Report link automatically opens MySite to the Progress Report for the specific class you are working in.

New Gradebook

Canvas has a New Gradebook that was turned on for all of IVC as of the beginning of the Fall 2019 semester.  It includes enhancements and functions that were not previously available.  These include additional ability to contact your students directly from the gradebook as well as being able to filter and order assignments based on Assignment Name, Module, and other factors.

Canvas Analytics

Canvas now offers Analytics for your class.  You can see average course grades, how one student compares to the class, all against one assignment.  You can also contact students based on their current grade in the class.

This is a useful tool for identifying students who are at risk of not succeeding in your class.

Other Tools

There are many other tools that are now available in Canvas.  Please checkout the Webinars for additional information.

Spring 2019

Some changes have been made this semester.  In January, we had the first ever Canvas Challenge Camp.  Previously we have had IOTC and @ONE training, this was a specific camp created exclusively for IVC that focused on Canvas.

During this semester, Tim Van Norman is providing Webinars each Friday at 1:00.  To signup and attend the Webinar, please click on Workshops Calendar at the top of this page.  If you would like to view the previous Webinars, click on Training Webinars below, which may have you login, to view the page.

Training Webinars

Please let us know if you have ideas for future Webinars.

Important Announcement: Migration to Canvas - Finalized

Irvine Valley College is pleased to announce that we have selected Canvas by Instructure as the college new enterprise Learning Management System (LMS). Following a transition period, Canvas will replace Blackboard, the IVC’s current LMS. Both Blackboard and Canvas will be fully supported throughout this transition period.

The Canvas Migration Timeline was approved on September 29, 2016 by Academic Senate: Use Fall 2016, Spring 2017, Summer 2017, and Fall 2017 to phase-in Canvas;

All courses have migrated fully to Canvas starting Spring 2018 (January 2018).

The selection of Canvas LMS followed an extensive, campus-wide evaluation process. Canvas received overwhelmingly favorable assessment from students, faculty, and staff who reviewed, evaluated, and pilot tested a number of LMS platforms.

Extensive pilot testing indicates that Canvas will save faculty and students time and enhance student engagement that may lead to improved learning outcomes.

Canvas testers awarded very high ratings for its friendly and easy-to-learn user interface, grade book feature, e-mail communications and notifications system, overall navigation structure, and speed grader functionality. Canvas also provides a free mobile interface.
